The 4 Non-Negotiables of Perimenopausal Skin Care
Perimenopause can change your skin almost as quickly as it changes your mood. As estrogen levels fluctuate, skin may become drier, thinner, more sensitive and less resilient. Fine lines can appear more noticeable, firmness may decline and products you have used for years may suddenly feel ineffective.
While a bathroom counter full of products can be tempting, a strong perimenopausal skin-care routine begins with four essentials: sunscreen, vitamin C, barrier-supporting hydration and a growth-factor serum.
1. Daily Sunscreen
If you only use one anti-aging product, make it sunscreen. Daily UV exposure accelerates collagen loss, uneven pigmentation, wrinkles and skin laxity—all concerns that may become more noticeable during perimenopause.
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen you will genuinely enjoy wearing every day. Tinted formulas can provide additional protection against visible light while helping even the appearance of the complexion.
A few of our favorites include:
SkinMedica tinted sunscreen
skinbetter science sunscreens
Colorescience tinted and brush-on formulas
Apply sunscreen every morning to the face, neck, chest and other exposed areas. Reapply when spending extended time outside, sweating or swimming.
2. An Antioxidant Vitamin C Serum
Vitamin C is your morning defense partner. A well-formulated vitamin C serum helps protect the skin from environmental stressors while improving the appearance of uneven tone, dullness and fine lines.
SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic is a longtime favorite because it combines vitamin C with vitamin E and ferulic acid for enhanced antioxidant protection. Apply it in the morning after cleansing and before moisturizer and sunscreen.
Think of it this way: vitamin C helps defend your skin from daily environmental damage, while sunscreen helps block damaging UV rays. They work better as a team.
3. Barrier-Supporting Hydration
Perimenopausal skin often struggles to hold onto moisture. This can lead to tightness, flaking, sensitivity and fine lines that suddenly look deeper. Supporting the skin barrier is no longer optional—it is the foundation of comfortable, healthy-looking skin.
Depending on your skin’s needs, consider:
SkinMedica HA5 for multi-level hydration
SkinMedica Dermal Repair Cream for rich, nourishing moisture
SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore for replenishing essential skin lipids
HA5 can be layered underneath a moisturizer when additional hydration is needed. A richer cream may be especially helpful at night or during colder, drier weather.
4. A Growth-Factor or Regenerative Serum
As we age, the skin’s natural renewal processes begin to slow. A growth-factor or regenerative serum can help improve the visible appearance of fine lines, texture, tone and firmness.
Two standout options are:
SkinMedica TNS Advanced+ Serum
Plated Skin Science exosome serums
These are treatment products—not traditional moisturizers—so they should be applied to clean skin before heavier creams and sunscreen. Consistent use is essential; meaningful skin improvement comes from a long-term routine rather than an occasional application.
Your Simple Perimenopausal Routine
Morning: Cleanser, vitamin C, HA5 or moisturizer, and sunscreen.
Evening: Cleanser, TNS or Plated serum, followed by a barrier-supporting moisturizer.
Perimenopausal skin does not necessarily need more products. It needs the right products used consistently. Protect it, defend it, hydrate it and support its renewal—and then personalize the routine with professional treatments or additional ingredients based on your individual concerns.
