What is Botox?

Botox Cosmetic is the most effective non-surgical aesthetic treatment for preventing and erasing fine lines and wrinkles. It is the leading brand of botulinum toxin in the world used to achieve the goal of stopping wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions. (Other brands include Dysport and Jueveau, but Botox is the brand 99% of patients ask for by name.)

Botox® is the most popular aesthetic procedure performed in the United States and one of The Skin Care Center at Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery’s most requested treatments. Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery and The Skin Care Center at Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery have been awarded the prestigious Black Diamond status, by Allergan, the makers of Botox®. Black Diamond status places our practice in the top 1% in the entire country for demonstrating our expertise through a high volume of aesthetic procedures including Botox® and Juvederm®.

How does Botox work?

Botox works beneath the skin’s surface to target the underlying muscle activity by relaxing it. This causes wrinkles, frown lines, and crow’s feet to smooth and soften, improving the appearance of the signs of aging and delivering noticeable, yet natural results.

Why Botox?

Wrinkles are the result of many factors including the natural aging process, environmental factors, sun damage, and repetitive facial expressions causing contraction of facial muscles. Day-to-day facial expressions including smiling, frowning, squinting and concentration require repeated contraction of facial muscles, resulting in wrinkles and fine lines to appear along the forehead, crow’s feet, and furrow’s in between the brows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Botox Made of?
Botox is made up of a purified protein made from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. Prior to use, this toxin is highly purified and then is administered through a series of small injections into areas of the skin that show signs of aging, such as wrinkles. These injections are highly effective at temporarily erasing or reducing horizontal forehead lines, vertical frown lines, crow’s feet, and other wrinkles.
Is Botox just for forehead wrinkles?
Besides treating wrinkles on the forehead, Botox can also be used to lift areas of the skin that start to sag with age, such as the corners of your mouth. It can also be used to reduce smoker’s lines, and soften rigid neckbands.
How Does Botox Work?

Botox injections deliver a purified protein that blocks the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscles, where it is injected. By reducing the nerve impulses in these muscles movement is restricted, preventing wrinkles in the skin.

How Long Do Botox Treatments Take?
Botox treatments can be performed quickly, with the injection process taking only about 10 minutes. Treatment length may vary depending on the number of areas treated.
When Can I Expect to See Results?
Following your treatment, you will notice results within 24 to 48 hours. The final results may not be seen until 2 weeks after your injections.
How Long Is the Recovery Time?

One of the many advantages of Botox is its limited downtime. After your injections, there may be slight bruising, but most people return to their normal activities without anyone knowing they’ve had any “work” done.

How Long Do the Effects Last?
The effects of Botox can last for four to six months. When you start to notice your lines reappearing, it’s time to get another round.

What Are Common Treatment Areas?

More advanced techniques can be used to:

  • raise the eyebrows
  • correct the “bunny lines” on the nose
  • raise downturned corners of the mouth
  • treat a dimpled “orange peel” chin
  • treat a gummy smile

The most common treatment areas:

  • frown lines
  • crow’s feet
  • forehead lines
  • creases between brows

The Skin Care Center at Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery offers Botox injections on a walk-in basis. However, you can always make an appointment if you have a preference as to which medical professional will be administering your treatment. It usually takes about 15 minutes. It is minimally invasive and offers dramatic results within days of being treated. Effects typically last between 3 to 4 months. Results may vary.
